Chiba Sakura High School Visit

On 21 January 2016, a group of 39 students and 4 teachers from Japan, Chiba Prefecture, visited our school. They had a fun and interactive morning with our students from 3E1, which includes cultural sharing through games and presentations; a guided school tour and sharing of scientific knowledge with each other through poster sessions. Our school leaders, partnership committee teachers and 3E1 form teacher Mr Aaron Tang and Mr Wong Eik Kiat also had a good time interacting with the educators from Japan.

Upon arrival, our visitors were given a warm welcome at the foyer by our school leaders, teachers and students. Following a brief introduction of Hong Kah Secondary School and Chiba Sakura High School by Mdm Sung (Principal, Hong Kah Secondary) and Mr. Jitushara Kotsuke (Vice-Principal, Chiba Sakura High) respectively, students of 3E1 presented a short cultural sharing on Singapore before the commencement of the guided school tour.

The session resumed with a series of presentation on Project Work and the Applied Learning Programme Trip to Japan in 2015 by Narya Julianto, Deivesh Ramesh, Kang Taehyeok and Vanessa Tan. Our Japanese student guests also presented on their academic poster research such as the relation between the shape and flight distance of paper plane. Both our students and visitors enjoyed and benefitted tremendously through these academic sharing sessions.

In showcasing our school’s Applied Learning Programme in Electronics, our students also played host in guiding our visitors in concurrent activities of drone-flying as well as a friendly robotics competition. Our students also specially prepared notes of appreciation in the form of a personalised postcard in presenting to our guests. The visit ended with a segment of cultural games, gift exchange and closing address by our Vice-Principal Mr Yong. However, the friendship forged did not end here. The students of both countries also exchanged names, email addresses and even social network links so as to keep in contact in future.

The teachers and students from Chiba Sakura High (Japan) gave a lot of positive feedback about our school, teachers and students. They were impressed by the vibrancy and warmth of our school. One of their student representatives also mentioned that it was indeed fun to study in Hong Kah Secondary School.  The hosting experience has also provided a good platform for Hong Kah Lites to learn about the cultures and languages of other countries.
